They are casting the following roles:

[TWIST] 9-13 years old small African American Male, the child of a white mother and black father, he is a plucky but innocent child, given the name “Twist” by a teen girl who helped birth the baby as a storm raged outside. Raised in an orphanage, Twist, because of his mixed heritage is always the outsider, often met with much derision, and the butt of many jokes by the older boys. However, it seems he has a natural talent for dancing, a gift he inherited from his late daddy. Despite a series of unfortunate events, Twist remains hopeful, tenacious and endearing…LEAD Must be a Strong Singer, Dancer especially (Tap) & Actor, Triple Threat! (R&B, Pop).

[BOSTON] African American Male 30-45 years old, a song and dance man working in New Orleans, Boston is devastated by the sudden loss of his performing partner, Roosevelt, who is gunned down leaving the theatre. Insecure about his talents to begin with, he opens a speakeasy during Prohibition, using young boys to sell liquor for him, always looking for an easy way to make a buck. A crafty scoundrel who seems to have lost his moral moorings, Boston is given a much-needed kick in the behind by his girlfriend, Della, who teaches him a thing or two about the importance of love and loyalty…LEAD Must be a Strong Singer, Dancer especially (Tap) & Actor, Triple Threat! (Soulful Broadway Sound, Blues).

[DELLA] African American Female 25-35 years old, first seen at 16 and later in her early 20s, she is a survivor, a courageous, unstoppable young woman, greedy with dreams of her own to fulfill. Raised in an orphanage, she flees soon after helping a young white woman give birth to a baby boy whom Della names Twist. She’s unwilling to take on the task of raising the child, despite pleas from the dying mother. Years later, quite the diva, she is a singer and big draw at Boston’s speakeasy, also Boston’s girlfriend. Plagued with guilt after meeting Twist, now 9 years old, she vows to do right by the boy…LEAD Must be a Strong Singer & Actress, Dancing always a plus! (R & B, Pop, Big Voice)

[MR. PRUDHOMME] Caucasian Male 50-65 years old, a kindly, self-possessed man, with a big heart, he is a lawyer who often helps those with little means. He’s outraged, but always gentlemanly, when a judge finds young Twist guilty of selling liquor (even though the boy claims he thought he was selling medicine). Prudhomme asks the court to have the child remanded to his custody. He is eager to provide Twist with a home and an education…LEAD Must be a Strong Singer & Actor! (Jazzy)

[ROOSEVELT KING] African American Male 25-35 years old, a popular song and dance man in New Orleans, he is a warm, effusive, talented fellow, Boston’s partner on stage. Later, Angela also appears, to sing about the transcendence of love….Must be a Strong Singer with a Rock Star Voice & Actress! (Pop, R & B, Gospel)

[LUCIUS THATCHER] Caucasian Male 30-45 years old, he is Angela’s ne’er do well brother, a con man who burned through his inheritance and now wants to tap into that of his dead sister. He is told by Prudhomme that all monies have been left to Angela’s son, and only if the child should die, would Lucius be able to collect the inheritance. An unscrupulous fellow, he makes plans to get his hands on the kid…LEAD Must be a Powerful Singer & Actor. (Rock & Roll, Legit)

Calling Actors, Directors, Dramaturgs, Playwrights and Designers!

TCG is hosting a series of five teleconferences for independent theatre artists. These focus groups aim to engage individual theatre artists in a far-ranging dialogue to discuss how individual artists are doing in the American theatre field today.

Five teleconferences are scheduled, each for a specific discipline in the theatre: actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights and designers. If you are a multi-disciplinary artist, or you do not see your discipline represented in the calls below, please self-select one category that you feel is closest to your area of expertise.

Calls will be held on upcoming days as follows:

Monday, April 19 at 4pm EDT — Actors

Monday, April 26 at 4pm EDT — Directors

Monday, May 3 at 3pm EDT — Dramaturgs

Monday, May 3 at 4.30pm EDT — Playwrights

Monday, May 10 at 4pm EDT — Designers

Artists interested in participating must register here by 5pm EDT on the Thursday prior to the teleconference. TCG’s intent is to have as geographically and culturally diverse a group as possible represented on the call. As such, 30 participants will be selected from the registrant pool by lottery. Participants will be notified by the end of the day on the Friday prior to the call. For maximum efficiency, a series of questions will be circulated to participants prior to the call. Registrants who are not selected for the call will be given the opportunity to voice their points of view via electronic survey.

Specifically, TCG wants to know:

How can we strengthen the relationship between individual artists and institutions?

What would strengthen the artistic vitality of theatre?

People are talking about Women + War:

“A rich example of the social power of cultural arts. By exploring the world’swars thoughtfully, the message reflects the importance of pursuing peace around the globe.”

– Former President Jimmy Carter

“… Synchronicity’s occasionally funny, often chilling and forever insightful look into the psychology of war in all its guises [is] the product of nearly 50 interviews with area women whose lives have been touched by the social scourge. The world premiere succeeds at the nearly impossible task of making a dreaded subject come to life as a provocative entertainment that gently touches the soul with compassion and generosity.”

– Wendell Brock, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“Synchronicity’s staged incarnation of ‘Women + War’ is a magnificently rendered dramatic work that’s frequently breathtaking to behold. … Sheer inspiration.”

– Bert Osborne, The Sunday Paper

“Finally, a cultural experience that puts a human face on the barrage of contradictions we read about in the daily news. Now that’s good theater.”

– AJC

In the heart of Fort Gaines, Georgia, is the largest collection of artifacts from frontier America. Over the course of 2007-2008, Savage Tree artists Michael McReynolds, Ashby Wratchford, Mimi Epstein, Brent Dey and Kristi Casey Sanders made several trips down to “The Gaines” to film museum founder David R. Campbell and members of the local community.

They shared with us their stories about what life was like in rural America before electricity, before cars, before indoor plumbing and soda fountains. Mr. Campbell shared with us the hundreds of stories he’d collected about the artifacts on display in his museum.

Last year, we received a grant to turn some of our footage into a self-guided video tour of the museum. We’re proud to say that it’s been completed. We’ll be posting short excerpts of those stories over the next several months.

On Monday, October 5 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., the High Museum of Art is offering a free preview of “Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius.” Featuring around 50 works, the exhibit has on display more than 20 da Vinci sketches and studies, some of which will be shown in the U.S. for the first time.

The exhibit juxtaposes da Vinci’s mature sketches and musings with rare examples of his work as a student in other “masters’” studios, including exquisite renderings of figures in terracotta and silver. A “restored” fragment of a lost da Vinci fresco enhanced by Peter Paul Rubens is a highlight.

Also on display are works by Donatello, Verrocchio and Rustici — including Rustici’s bronzes from the recently restored “John the Baptist” façade in Florence, Italy. Be sure to pick up a magnifying glass at the beginning of the exhibit, so you can see da Vinci’s exquisite detail work in the sketches on display.

No advance reservations will be accepted for the preview and the last ticket will be issued at 6 p.m. The exhibit officially opens Tuesday, October 6 p.m. For more information, visit high.org/Leonardo.
